COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) — The South Carolina Cannabis Coalition announced Saturday their third annual rally at the Statehouse will take place in January 2025.
The South Carolina Cannabis Supporters Rally will take place Jan. 31 starting at 10am. The rally will last 420 minutes according to the SCCC and is designed to raise awareness to the medical benefits of cannabis and discuss cannabis law reform, decriminalization, and legalization efforts in the Palmetto State.
Several are slated to speak at the event starting at noon, including Lowcountry Sen. Deon Tedder and Rep. JA Moore.
The group said DJ Gamecock will be on hand to provide cannabis-themed music throughout the event via his “420 Music 420 Playlist of 420 Music” Spotify playlist. They are encouraging attendees to bring their own portable Bluetooth speakers to utilize as part of Spotify’s Jam music-sharing feature.
After the rally ends, some SCCC members plan to picket during rush-hour traffic, encouraging commuters to “Honk for LEGAL Weed in SC,” per the group.
The SCCC said they are advocating for a “more comprehensive” medical cannabis program and the end of “cannabis prohibition” in South Carolina, which they said would save SC over $100 million annually in law enforcement and court costs while generating $100 million annually through taxation. They estimated that in the five years following their plan for cannabis reform, around $1 billion would be generated to “finally fix SC public schools and roads.”
