BOISE, IDAHO (CBS2) — Idaho legislator Rep. Bruce Skaug has proposed a bill that would impose a minimum fine for misdemeanor marijuana possession in the state.

Rep. Skaug, Nampa (R) mentioned during Thursday’s House Judiciary Rules & Administration hearing that a judge encouraged him to set a fee for misdemeanor marijuana possession.

“Right now we have no baseline for fines on marijuana, we have one judge that charges only $2.50 for misdemeanor marijuana fines and others that are $500.”

Skaug’s proposed legislation would set the minimum fine at $300 for individuals caught with 3 ounces or less of marijuana. In Idaho, possessing more than 3 ounces is classified as a felony.

“We do not want this to become a marijuana state,” Skaug said during the hearing.

A similar bill was introduced last year by Rep. Skaug where the minimum fine would have been $420 however, it did not make it to the Governor’s desk.

The committee voted to introduce the bill. Further hearing is expected before it heads to the House floor.
