MASON, Ohio (WKRC) – The debate over whether to allow marijuana dispensaries in Mason has become a hot topic; residents are voicing strong opinions on both sides of the issue.

“I went over 40 years without ever having smelled marijuana,” said David Williams, a Mason resident. “Now, I smell it in so many different locations, including at stop lights, gas stations, and parking lots.”

Currently, Mason does not permit medical dispensaries and has yet to make a decision regarding recreational ones. Opponents of the proposed zoning changes cite safety concerns.

“Dispensaries will bring in more people from out of the community, which means more traffic,” Williams said.

Janice Roeder, another Mason resident, urged the city council to prohibit the establishment of both medical and adult-use dispensaries.

“I’m here in person to ask that city council consider and enact an ordinance prohibiting the establishment of medical and adult-use dispensaries,” Roeder said.

55% of Mason voters supported recreational marijuana when it was on the ballot. Chris Cox, a Mason business owner, is among those advocating for dispensaries.

“If the voters support it, why not?” Cox said.

Cox argued that allowing dispensaries would keep tax revenue within the community.

“Why are we sending that tax revenue to Lebanon or Monroe?” Cox said. “It makes no sense where there are plenty of brick-and-mortar spots open and ready for lease and are available.”

Cox also highlighted the potential benefits for individuals with chronic illnesses.

“Those products are certified; they’re guaranteed to be safe, as safe as they can be,” said Cox.

The community will have another opportunity to voice their opinions at a city council meeting on March 10. A vote from the council could follow the public hearing.
