CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Starting on Wednesday, Kentuckians will have to navigate a challenging legal landscape as medical marijuana becomes legal in the state while remaining illegal under federal law.

This discrepancy creates a conflict for residents who may have to choose between their health and their right to bear arms.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has issued a warning that individuals who apply for a medical marijuana card will be prohibited from purchasing firearms or ammunition from licensed gun dealers. This federal restriction also extends to current gun owners who obtain medical marijuana cards, as they are expected to relinquish their firearms.

Violating this federal law could result in severe penalties, including prison time and fines up to $250,000. However, the ATF has indicated that charges are likely to be pursued only if the violation is connected to another felony.
