Democratic State Representative Stephanie Kifowit of Oswego says one topic that many lawmakers expect to hear during the upcoming lame duck session is hemp regulation. She says recent comments about regulation of hemp. also known as Delta-8, from Governor J.B. Pritzker have re-ignited years long conversations about regulating it in the same manner as cannabis.
“There is legislation to regulate hemp products that are called Delta-8. I know that the governor had a press conference, wanting to see something move in lame duck with regards to regulating the substance in the same manner as which our cannabis is regulated in, which would remove the products from, right now, they’re technically legal.”
Kifowit says hemp is currently legal to sell in places like gas stations and convenience stores, but the products it is put into and how it is packaged can be enticing to children. She says with the short session, it is unknown if the regulation topic will be brought up or have enough time or votes to pass, as Kifowit says 60 votes are required to pass legislation in lame duck.
The lame duck session is scheduled to run from Saturday until Tuesday, with the 104th General Assembly set for inauguration at noon on January 8th.
