BISMARCK, N.D. (KUMV) – State lawmakers are pushing for change when it comes to marijuana and THC crimes.

House Bill 1596 comes with some reductions for various possession charges. If this passes, those caught with less than half an ounce of marijuana and less than two grams of THC would receive noncriminal citations.

Sponsor Liz Conmy, D-Fargo, says this bill came after suggestions from state attorneys from Cass and Stark Counties to lessen their bloated caseloads.

“We feel it accomplishes the goals of easing the backlog in courts and yet continues to be a deterrent,” said Conmy.

A representative of the Chiefs of Police Association of North Dakota spoke in opposition, arguing it sees this bill as a way of legalizing marijuana, which was voted down in November.

The House Judiciary Committee will make changes and provide a recommendation this week.
