CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A bill that would make recreational cannabis fully legal in Virginia passed through both chambers of the general assembly, but it faces a likely death at Governor Glenn Youngkin’s desk.
David Treccarichie, owner of the dispensary Skooma in downtown Charlottesville, has been a long-time advocate for clearer legislation surrounding cannabis use in Virginia. Currently, it is decriminalized, meaning Virginians over 21 can use it, but it is illegal to sell.
Advocates like Treccarichie hope Governor Youngkin will see the support behind the bill and decide against vetoing, as he has indicated he plans.
“It’s disheartening that Governor Youngkin has promised to veto the bill as it is fair and equitable for all businesses, establishes a well-regulated market that all can benefit,” Treccarichie said.
A final answer on the fate of the bill will be determined after session ends at the end of the month.
