PD. AND LOUISVILLE FIREFIGHTERS NOW TEMPORARILY WILL BE ALLOWED TO USE MEDICAL CANNABIS WHILE OFF DUTY WITHOUT BEING DISCIPLINED. THE UNION REPRESENTING THE FIREFIGHTERS TOOK LEGAL ACTION LAST MONTH AFTER THE DEPARTMENT’S DECISION NOT TO ALLOW MEMBERS TO USE MEDICAL CANNABIS. MEDICAL CANNABIS DID BECOME LEGAL THIS PAST JANUARY. THE UNION WILL ENTER INTO A GRIEVANCE PROCESS WITH THE CITY THAT WILL TAKE MONTHS NOW. LAST MONTH, THE UNION FILED A RESTRAINING ORDER AND AN INJUNCTION. THE ORDER, RECENTLY GRANTED BY A JUDGE, WILL STOP THE CITY FROM DISCIPLINING FIREFIGHTERS WHO USE MEDICAL CANNABIS WHILE OFF DUTY. IT WILL BE IN PLACE UNTIL THE INJUNCTION HEARING, WHICH WILL ASK FOR A PERMANENT ORDER TO STOP THE CITY FROM DISCIPLINING THOSE FIREFIGHTERS. WHILE THE GRIEVANCE PROCESS PLAYS OUT. THERE IS AN INJUNCTION HEARING PLANNED FOR MARCH. THE ORDER DOES NOT ALLOW FIREFIGHTERS TO USE MEDICAL CANNAB

Louisville firefighters can temporarily use medical cannabis while off-duty without facing disciplinary action, thanks to a recent judge’s order. The union representing the firefighters took legal action after the department initially prohibited the use of medical cannabis, which became legal in Kentucky on January 1. The judge’s order will remain in effect until an injunction hearing in March, which will seek a permanent order. The current order does not permit on-duty use or reporting to work under the influence.
