Many questions left to be answered in Nebraska’s medical marijuana rollout
The 2024 election is final in Nebraska. All ballot initiatives were certified on Monday. That means that barring a successful lawsuit appeal in the courts, Nebraska will have a medical marijuana law.But the specifics are still very much an open question. Even if a doctor were to prescribe it when the law goes into effect soon, there won’t be anyone to fulfill it. The law sets deadlines for the rollout. By July 1, “reasonable rules” must be adopted, and by Oct. 1, begin granting applications to fulfill medical marijuana prescriptions. The law creates a board and a Nebraska Medical Marijuana Commission. The first members of the board are the three members of the liquor control board. Then, the governor could appoint up to two more. The commission will need a staff. The Nebraska Liquor Control Commission director told KETV it might make the most sense for his agency to take control, rather than creating a new staff. But he doesn’t know yet if that will be what the legislature will choose to do.
