A man was arrested and six people displaced after a Friday morning fire began in a York County home from a “marijuana grow operation” in the basement, police said.

Northern York County Regional police responded to the 100 block of North Alpine Drive in Jackson Township around 4:40 a.m.

Firefighters initially saw smoke outside the home, but soon discovered flames in the basement, according to CBS 21.

While on the scene, police said they discovered a hydroponic marijuana-growing system in the basement.

Investigators also found a handgun, multiple marijuana plants, other illegal, unnamed drugs and drug paraphernalia, police said.

The fire investigator determined it was an electrical fire that started in the area of the hydroponic growing system.

A 27-year-old man who lived at the home was arrested and charged with endangering welfare of children, manufacturing a controlled substance, and recklessly endangering another person, police said. His name has not been released.

Police said the Red Cross is helping six people and their three pets find alternate housing because of the blaze. The fire was brought under control before 5:30 a.m., according to York County dispatch.

No injuries were reported, dispatch said.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information can call Northern York County Regional police at 717-467-8355 or email tips@nycrpd.org.
