Future of the Leaf Infusers does not grow marijuana at its McHenry location, nor does it plan to do so, Patricia Van Pelt told the city’s planning and zoning commission Wednesday.

The business, which is located at 3900 Mercy Drive and infuses THC and CBD into edible products, only operates now when it gets a shipment of the marijuana-derived oils.

“We come into the building once a month to make products for the month. Then we are delivering” products for the rest of the month, said Van Pelt, a former Illinois state senator from Chicago’s west side.

“There are no plans to grow [marijuana] in that building.”

The company wants to expand into making lotions and butters that use marijuana flower, she said. To do that, they need a variance from the city to allow a cannabis craft grow facility.

“The petitioner is required by the state to seek local approval for a cannabis craft grow facility in order to handle raw agricultural cannabis flower that will be turned into a butter for their infusion operations‚” even though it will not be grown there, according to City Planner Cody Sheriff’s report to the commission.

“There are no plans to grow [marijuana] in that building. We would buy products from other growers” to make teas, lotions and butters “to expand our offerings,” Van Pelt said.

She also assured the commission that there would be no noxious odors from the facility associated with the pot smell.

The commission approved Van Pelt’s request unanimously. It now goes on to the McHenry City Council for a vote, expected at a February meeting.

Future of the Leaf Infusers was first approved by the City Council in February 2022. The facility opened in 2023.
