RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – The election is just two months away, and voters will soon get to decide if recreational marijuana should be legalized in South Dakota.

Nationally, both presidential candidates have voiced their support for marijuana legalization in a rare moment of political unity.

Former president Donald Trump, who previously avoided taking a position on the issue, signaled his support Saturday for a ballot measure in Florida that would legalize recreational marijuana.

Vice President Kamala Harris has shifted her stance on this issue through the years but is now actively supporting the legalization of marijuana.

“This might be the only ballot issue that both the Republicans and Democrats agree on throughout the country, regulation in cannabis works, we’ve seen that across many states that have legalized cannabis, and we’re here to try to legalize cannabis in South Dakota in 2024,” Kittrick Jeffries, the owner of Puffy’s Dispensary, said.

South Dakota voters will have Initiated Measure 29 on their November 5 ballot.

If passed, that measure would legalize the possession, distribution, and use of recreational marijuana for people ages 21 and older
