CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Greater Cincinnatians are adding marijuana to their Thanksgiving menu.
This is the first year that two major “weed holidays” can be legally celebrated in Ohio. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving sees one of the highest sales for cannabis outside of 4/20. It’s known as “Green Wednesday.”
“We originally opened at eight, and it has been a slow upkeep, but people have started to pick up, and it’s nice. The sales were phenomenal,” said The Landing Dispensary general manager Abayomi Nelson.
Nelson estimated that recreational cannabis purchases outnumber medical sales by 80% to 20%. He said that people went in to find something that’d help with anxiety around family and make eating even more appetizing.
“One of the biggest symptoms whenever you consume cannabis [is that] it makes you real hungry, and Thanksgiving is all about eating a whole lot of food, getting a big stomach, and taking a nice nap. And when you wake up, spend more time with family,” Nelson said.
Beyond Hello stayed open for last-minute Thanksgiving purchases and will continue to offer discounts on Black Friday up to 30%.
“As it becomes more normalized and more acceptable, I think we’ll see more folks come in and enjoy what we have to offer,” said Beyond Hello general manager Michael Inclema.
Inclema said that “Green Wednesday” was a hit this year. They had all the registers staffed and a line spilling over the parking lot. People have been coming in all Thursday for medical and recreational use of cannabis.
“I got pretty bad anxiety and PTSD, so relax me and stuff like that. But also, share with some of the family. Have a good time,” said medical marijuana card holder Colton Chapin.
The pre-Thanksgiving holiday has some competition with “Blackout Wednesday,” a day where people gather to binge drink. Trent Woloveck with Jushi Holdings said that marijuana just might replace alcohol’s popularity.
“Maybe they want to go run the 5K in the morning. That’s not for somebody like me, but you know that will allow them not quite to be as hungover as if they were to black out,” said Jushi Holdings chief strategy officer Trent Woloveck.
The state’s total recreational marijuana sales are $178 million as of November 23, compared to $2 billion in medical sales. This is according to the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control. It’s important to keep in mind that recreational marijuana sales in the state only began on August 6.
