NEW BUFFALO — The amount of money Southwest Michigan municipalities and counties received in late February from the state in adult-use marijuana tax revenue for 2024 sales increased from the previous year to more than $6.17 million.
That’s up from the combined $4.6 million received for 2023 sales and from the $3.5 million distributed for 2022 sales.
Each municipality received $58,228 per eligible license in 2024.
Niles received $407,600 for its seven licenses while New Buffalo Township and Buchanan each received $349,371 for their six licenses.
The 2025 figure for New Buffalo Township seems certain to reflect a large increase.

Based on 2024 sales, Southwest Michigan counties received $58,228 for each eligible store in their jurisdiction.
Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties are getting more money even though the amount of money given out for every eligible retail store and microbusiness decreased from $59,086 for 2023.
That’s because there was an increase in the number of eligible licensed businesses in the three counties – from 39 in 2023 to 53 in 2024.
Berrien County received almost $1.6 million for its 27 licenses – up from receiving $1.2 million from 19 licenses in 2023.
The money Cass County received increased from $413,604 for seven licenses based on 2023 sales to $465,829 for eight licenses from 2024 sales.
Van Buren County received almost $1.05 million for 18 licenses for 2024 sales. That was an increase from $768,122 the county received from 13 licenses for 2023 sales.
According to the Michigan Department of Treasury, almost $100 million was distributed to 302 cities, villages, townships, counties and Indian tribes across the state.
“Starting this week, my team will begin to distribute adult-use marijuana payments to Michigan’s local units of government and tribal partners,” State Treasurer Rachael Eubanks said in a recent news release. “The dollars received from the adult-use marijuana taxes and fees go toward schools, roads and back into Michigan’s neighborhoods. Local entities and tribes can spend these dollars however they deem fit for their needs.”
In addition, more than $116 million was sent to the School Aid Fund for K-12 education and another $116 million to the Michigan Transportation Fund.
“Municipalities, counties, and tribes certainly benefit from their local cannabis businesses in many ways, including good-paying jobs, community involvement, and increased revenues for important priorities in their budget,” said Cannabis Regulatory Agency Executive Director Brian Hanna in the release. “This portion of the excise tax revenue makes a direct impact in the communities where our licensees work and live.”
