The first step toward overturning the Bellefontaine City Council’s recent ban on adult-use, recreational marijuana sales in the city was taken Thursday, April 10, as Tim Steinhelfer delivered to the City Auditor’s Office a petition containing 440 signatures demanding a referendum to repeal the council’s decision.
According to Ohio law, the petition will now be secured by the city auditor for 10 days, after which time it will be forwarded to the Logan County Board of Elections, which will certify the signatures.
The magic number to get the measure on the ballot in November is 363, or 10 percent of the voters who cast ballots in the most recent gubernatorial election. Should 363 of the signatures prove to be valid by the Logan County BOE, the referendum to override the council’s decision to will appear on ballots in all four Bellefontaine city wards in the November election.
