SAGINAW, MI — Saginaw City Hall officials plan to showcase proposed changes to the city’s zoning ordinance during a public gathering later this month.

Saginaw officials scheduled a special meeting for that purpose at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Saginaw City Hall, 1315 S. Washington.

“It’s crucial for residents to understand how the zoning ordinance can shape both their individual future and the city’s collective future,” Cassie Zimmerman, the city’s director of planning and economic development, said in a statement.

Zimmerman and members of the city’s staff helped author the proposed changes to the ordinance, a document that regulates residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural land use within the municipality.

The crafting of the proposed changes has included public input. Last year, Saginaw officials hosted three open house-style workshops aimed at engaging the public about the existing zoning ordinance, which remains available online by clicking here.

A webpage dedicated to the proposed revisions is available by clicking here.

The Feb. 18 meeting will focus on proposals to language relating to marijuana establishments, landscaping, home occupation, off-street parking, accessory dwelling units and building standards, planners said.

“Our primary objective is to create a zoning ordinance that meets the specific needs of our community,” Zimmerman said.

“We want to hear from our residents and develop a zoning code that connects people and places, creates opportunities, and prevents conflicting land uses in shared areas. Together, we can create a city that balances commercial activity, residential neighborhoods, and green spaces for everyone’s enjoyment.”

City officials will broadcast the meeting live on SGTV, Channel 191, as well as on the Saginaw YouTube channel.

A recording of the meeting later will be uploaded to the YouTube channel.
