Massachusetts cannabis regulators issued a broad public health advisory Monday after discovering potentially contaminated marijuana products sold at more than 30 dispensaries statewide. The warning impacted several popular brands including Strane and Garcia Hand Picked.
The state’s Cannabis Control Commission announced that follow-up compliance testing showed elevated levels of yeast, mold and coliforms in products that initially passed required testing between March and September 2024, according to a statement.
The affected products include marijuana flower and pre-rolled products under various brands and strains including Carbon Fiber, Highland OG, Frosted Jungle and Silver Kush, regulators noted. They were sold at both recreational marijuana retailers and medical dispensaries between May 31, 2024, and Jan. 30, 2025.
“Massachusetts maintains higher yeast and mold thresholds than many other states with adult-use marijuana,” the Commission noted in its announcement.
While no illnesses have been reported, regulators have blocked additional sales through Metrc, the state’s tracking system. Consumers and medical marijuana patients in possession of the affected products are being advised to either destroy them or return them to their point of purchase.
“The commission deems a threat to public health and safety when marijuana is found to have total yeast and mold above the acceptable limits,” officials said in the advisory.
The health alert impacts dozens of retailers across Massachusetts, from Boston to the Berkshires, including multiple locations operated by major operators such as Holistic Industries and ARL Healthcare.
Consumers can identify affected products by checking batch numbers listed on product labels against the comprehensive list published by regulators. The commission has established multiple channels for inquiries, including phone and email support.
Affected products include:
Strane Carbon Fiber strain (1g pre-rolls, 3.5g and 28g packages)
Strane Frosted Jungle strain (1g pre-rolls, 3.5g packages)
Strane Silver Kush strain (pre-rolls and 5g 10-pack)
Garcia Hand Picked Highland OG strain (3.5g, 7g and 28g packages, 1g pre-rolls)
Key retailers and medical dispensaries affected:
Holistic Industries locations in Somerville, Easthampton, Springfield and Monson
ARL Healthcare facilities in Quincy and Middleborough
KG Collective locations in Brockton and Cambridge
Enlite Cannabis Dispensary sites in Northampton and Springfield
Northeast Alternatives Retail in New Bedford and Seekonk
