CENTRE COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Medical marijuana dispensaries have been operating for several years now in Pennsylvania.
Could their growing business be another factor in legalizing marijuana on a larger scale statewide?
Back in 2017, Terrapin was one of the first in Pennsylvania to receive a medical marijuana license.
“Pennsylvania has one of the most robust medical programs in the country. It’s close to a million patients involved in the program, who are not necessarily actively registered.”
On Thursday, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held for a Terrapin Care Station dispensary in Bellefonte.
A historic moment for the industry as Terrapin is the first in the Pennsylvania to take advantage of a new state law, known as Act 63, allowing independent medical marijuana operators to open dispensaries.
“The demand from patients, especially in rural communities, has been quite underserved for some time. That’s why we are so thrilled to be here in an area where people no longer have to drive 30, 40, 50 miles to get medicine.”
Terrapin’s expansion comes amidst more talks in Harrisburg about legalizing marijuana use in Pennsylvania on a larger scale.
The decision is backed by the governor, and all of Pennsylvania’s surrounding states, except West Virginia, now have recreational use programs.
Terrapin executives say the success of their industry could be a backdrop to further legalization.
“We absolutely welcome any conversation that continues to put a spotlight on the medicine that we are providing to patients who have debilitating conditions.”
The Bellefonte site is the first of three dispensaries that Terrapin plans to open in the coming months, which will include the hiring of nearly 45 employees.
