Veteran cannabis policymaker Joshua Sanderlin has been nominated by Governor Matt Meyer to become Delaware’s next Marijuana Commissioner.

Delaware has been without someone in that role since Robert Coupe announced he was leaving at the start of this year for a job in the private sector.

Sanderlin worked in regulatory compliance and legislative matters for Greenberg Traurig, LLP for a decade before transitioning to a partnership with the Cogent Law Group in 2017, where worked as a consultant looking to end the federal ban on cannabis.

He left Cogent in 2019 for his own Sanderlin Stretegies, PLLC, working on shaping state-level cannabis laws.

Sanderlin received his undergraduate degree from Jacksonville University in Florida, before going on a Masters at Florida State, and Juris Doctor from Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

Delaware passed legalization laws in 2023, but have been slow to adopt recreational retail establishments, with the latest hurdle being the FBI telling Delaware the Delaware Marijuana Control Act violates Public Law 92-544.

House Bill 110 was introduced recently looking to take care of some of the legal language on background checks.

Paul Hyland has been serving as Acting Marijuana Commissioner since Coupe left the role.

Sanderlin will need to have his nomination approved by the Delaware State Senate.
