Missouri dispensaries sold more than $1.46 billion in cannabis in 2024, representing one of the more robust markets in the nation—both overall and relative to its population.

That sales total includes $1.28 billion in adult-use transactions and $181 million in medical cannabis sales, according to the state’s Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS). Notably, Missouri dispensaries concluded 2024 with their best sales month on record, coming just shy of $131 million in December.

Despite not quite 2 years old, Missouri’s adult-use cannabis program is now the fifth largest in the country, passing the likes of Colorado and Arizona this year. Although these two states haven’t finalized their December sales figures yet, Colorado is on pace for $1.41 billion in overall sales in 2024, while Arizona is on pace for $1.27 billion in overall sales for the year, according to their respective state revenue departments.

Missouri’s adult-use retail market is only bested by California, Michigan, Illinois and Massachusetts. However, medical-only markets in Florida (roughly $2.1 billion) and Pennsylvania ($1.7 billion) are larger than the Show-Me state’s expanded market.

After launching adult-use sales in February 2023, Missouri’s average monthly adult-use sales figures grew 13% in 2024 while its average medical cannabis sales figures dipped 37% since the adult-use launch—from $24.1 million per month in 2023 to $15.1 million per month in 2024. Overall growth when accounting for both markets was 3% year-over-year, according to DHSS figures.

With approximately $6.2 million people, Missouri’s annual cannabis sales per capita sat at roughly $236 in 2024, right on par with Colorado’s 10-year-old market and nearly double that of California’s market, but not as hot as the $328 per capita in Michigan.

And with 215 dispensaries approved to operate, Missouri’s average retail facility is selling roughly $7 million worth of cannabis annually.
