LAPORTE — A nervous looking driver along a local stretch of Interstate 94 gave way to the discovery of 13 pounds of marijuana, more than a pound of THC edibles, 1,177 THC vape pen cartridges and other large quantities of marijuana products, according to a charging document.

Two Iowa men were arrested and face charges of dealing and possessing the drug, which remains illegal in Indiana, records show.

A Lake County police officer working as part of a highway interdiction team reportedly spotted the suspicious-looking driver around 1:30 p.m. Feb. 4 travelling westbound on I-94.

A license plate recognition system revealed the Iowa-based vehicle had been eastbound earlier in the day and then in the Detroit area, which the officer described as “a mass producer of marijuana,” according to a court document.

The driver, identified as Luis Diaz, 23, of Iowa, admitted to purchasing marijuana wax from a Michigan dispensary, police said.

He and Cade McConnaha, also of Iowa, who was a passenger in the vehicle, were reportedly placed in handcuffs while police searched their vehicle.

The search revealed 13 pounds of marijuana, four pounds of THC wax, 17.2 ounces of THC edibles, 1,200 milligrams of THC syrup and 1,177 THC vape pen cartridges, police said.

Police said they also recovered several stacks of cash referred to in the drug trade as “quick count bundles.”

At one point during the encounter, Diaz reportedly asked McConnaha, “Can you bond me out?”

McConnaha responded, “I’m going to jail too bro,” police said.
