HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A proposed bill in Alabama could soon classify popular hemp-derived THC products, like delta-8, delta-9, and delta-10, as illegal substances, putting them in the same category as LSD and heroin.
State Sen. Tim Melson, R-Florence, has introduced SB132, which aims to ban these psychoactive cannabinoids, raising concerns among consumers and industry advocates alike.
If passed, the bill would make possession of these substances a Class D felony, carrying a potential sentence of 366 days to 5 years.
The Associated Press reports that delta-8 THC surged in popularity following the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, also known as the Farm Bill, which differentiated hemp products from marijuana.
Currently, the bill is awaiting action in the Senate Committee on Healthcare and could take effect on October 1.
