New laws governing the sale of CBD and THC products will be going into effect next Wednesday, when the calendar flips to 2025.

Starting Jan. 1st, the minimum age to purchase these products goes from 18 to 21, with no grandfather clause for those who are between those ages.

“What you see with respect to this act is an obvious attempt by the legislature and ultimately signed by the governor (is) to kind of bring this other regulated product in line with what we’re doing with alcohol,” says Ernest Legier, commissioner of Louisiana Tobacco and Alcohol Control.

The state will also be cracking down on companies selling THC-laced gummies in packages that resemble those of popular candies, so that they are not marketed to children.

“It’s broad enough to be able to leave it up to interpretation from our agents,” Legier says, “but we like that because we want to err on the side of public safety rather than ambiguity.”

Where you’ll be able to buy CBD or THC products will also change come next Wednesday.

“Gas stations are prohibited, with the exception of truck stops,” says Legier. “And restaurants and bars are no longer allowed to be issued this permit. There is a grandfather provision for those type of entities that had permits prior to June 2024.”

There will also be new laws governing the sale and composition of THC-laced beverages.

Currently, they can be sold in six-packs; come Wednesday, not anymore.

“Now, it can only be a four-pack, in terms of beverages,” Legier says, “and each 12-oz. beverage is limited to 5 mg of THC.”
