White Deer, Pa. — A traffic stop on Interstate 80 in Union County led police to arrest a New Jersey man for having of four ounces of marijuana. 

Christian Mata, 37, of Bloomfield, was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped by police the evening of Jan. 9 on I-80 eastbound at mile marker 209 in White Deer Township. Trooper Matthew Lesher of PSP Milton stopped the 2022 black Lexus for having an illegible license plate with a tinted plate cover, according to the affidavit. 

When Lesher approached the car, he detected an odor of marijuana coming from the passenger area. The driver admitted there was marijuana in the car. However, he denied to consent to a search of the vehicle. 

Lesher applied for and received a search warrant from District Judge William Zalinski. Upon searching the car, Lesher found four yellow bags of marijuana, one white bag of marijuana, and two marijuana vape cartridges. In total, four ounces of marijuana was uncovered, according to the affidavit. 

Mata took full ownership of all items seized. Police charged him with felony manufacture, delivery, or possession with intent to deliver controlled substances, as well as misdemeanors of possession. District Judge Jeffrey Rowe arraigned Mata and set bail at $10,000 unsecured.
