The New Jersey Business Action Center unveiled a no-cost, online training program aimed at helping diverse entrepreneurs get established in the state’s cannabis industry.

Following its Oct. 16 launch, the Cannabis Training Academy offers technical assistance, training and mentorship to recreational cannabis license applicants in the social equity, legacy, impact zone, diversely owned and microbusiness categories.

Announced in late 2022, the CTA will walk applicants through everything they need to know to complete a cannabis application. It will also provide them with reliable information from trusted sources that either work, teach or consult in New Jersey’s cannabis space.

As a learner-led program, students can complete coursework at their own pace. In addition to pre-recorded webinars, participants can register to access live, virtual question and answer sessions with instructors. They will also be able to participate in future in-person workshops.

General students will have access to the first three levels of online instruction. Topics include:

Understanding how to establish a compliant New Jersey business;
The laws and regulations that shape the state’s cannabis market; and
An overview of the cannabis license application portal.

To gain access to the rest of the levels and course materials, eligible students must qualify as Impact Zone applicants. To qualify, general students will need to attest they currently live in an Impact Zone, plan to locate their future cannabis business inside of an Impact Zone and/or plan to hire future employees that live in Impact Zones, according to NJBAC.

Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way oversees NJBAC in her capacity as secretary of state. “Even if a businessperson has had experience working in the cannabis industry, the CTA will be an invaluable and up-to-date resource that will guide them through the process of legal cannabis business management,” Way commented. “The insights provided will help entrepreneurs avoid common pitfalls and get their business on the right track from the start.”

In a statement, Gov. Phil Murphy applauded the kickoff. “The state of New Jersey is committed to seeing aspiring small business owners succeed in the cannabis industry,” Murphy said.

“The CTA aims to create a well-informed, diverse community of leaders who can take advantage of these new opportunities and contribute to the growth and economic success of their respective neighborhoods and the state overall,” the Democratic governor added.
