NORWOOD, New York (WWNY) – Times sure have changed when it comes to law enforcement and marijuana. Case in point: the Norwood Police Department is offering advice on protecting backyard marijuana plants from thieves.

In a post on the department’s Facebook page, village police report that they arrested a 34-year-old man for allegedly stealing plants.

They say Joshua Barkley wore a mask and sunglasses to hide his identity as he pushed through a wire fence to swipe the plants from a backyard on September 19.

“Hours of investigation by Village police officers, along with the assistance of the community, helped lead officers to the person responsible,” the Facebook post states.

Barkley was charged with a felony count of fourth-degree grand larceny and misdemeanor counts of criminal trespass and criminal mischief.

According to police, two other households reported “their marijuana gardens had been raided, and the plants stolen” on September 19. Police said they’re continuing to investigate and arrests are expected.

The department points out that marijuana is now legal to possess under specific circumstances in New York state.

“However, it is also a huge temptation for thieves,” the Facebook post reads. “All growth gardens should be enclosed to prevent anyone from getting at the plants, and they should also have security camera surveillance.”
