Just five months after launching, Ohio’s adult-use cannabis market has reached $242.2 million in sales, largely in line with industry expectations.

However, an analysis of weekly data from the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control (DCC) reveals a notable price contraction across almost all product categories, with over half experiencing double-digit declines.

MJBizDaily reported that the price per pound for plant material, which accounts for 52% of adult-use sales, has dropped 32% to $3,178 since the market opened in August 2024.

Despite this price slump, demand for plant material has almost doubled, with consumers purchasing 2,158 pounds in the first week of January 2025, up from 1,284 pounds in August.

The average price per gram has also decreased by 27.6% to $6.80, while manufactured product prices have seen a more modest 9.6% decline.

It comes amid fresh efforts from Ohio’s Republican lawmakers to significantly alter the state’s voter-approved legalization law.

Senate Bill 56, introduced by Sen. Steve Huffman, proposes sweeping changes, including:

Raising the cannabis tax rate from 10% to 15%, with all revenue redirected to the state general fund.
Capping the number of dispensaries at 350, contrary to the original lack of license caps.
Reducing the THC content cap from 90% to 70%.
Halving the number of plants residents can grow at home from 12 to six.
Eliminating the social equity program.
Banning public consumption.

The bill has sparked immediate pushback from the Ohio cannabis industry, with the Ohio Cannabis Coalition warning that these changes could destabilize the market, creating uncertainty for businesses, workers, and consumers.

The introduction of SB 56 comes as the state’s GOP House speaker, Matt Huffman, appears to have shifted his stance on the cannabis law, abandoning previous plans to undermine provisions like home cultivation rights. However, conflicts between Senate and House Republican leadership may still hinder the bill’s progress.
