BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. (WMBF) – Over two pounds of drugs are off the streets after Bennettsville police initiated a traffic stop that led to the drug discovery.
The Bennettsville Police Department said on April 1, officers were conducting a traffic stop around 9:30 p.m. on Broad Street for a headlight violation.
When they approved the car, officers smelled a strong odor of marijuana. A search of the car led officers to discover a large glass contained in plain view containing a green leafy substance. A further search uncovered two more glass jars with the same substance.
The total amount of marijuana weighed in at two pounds.
“This case is an example of how proactive patrol and teamwork lead to impactful results. The actions of our officers removed a significant quantity of drugs from our streets, and we remain committed to ensuring our neighborhoods, especially areas near schools and parks, are safe and drug-free. I commend our officers for their proactive efforts as well as their alertness and professionalism,” Interim Chief Sammy Crosland said.
The driver, 24-year-old Jalarius Wright, was arrested on the scene and charged with possession with the intent to distribute marijuana and an additional charge for the intent to distribute drugs near a school, park, or playground.
He was booked at the Marlboro County Detention Center.
