PERRYSBURG, Ohio (WTVG) – There’s no place to buy pot in Perrysburg, yet. Perrysburg has a moratorium on retail dispensaries, cultivators, or any cannabis processors, but the city council is opening up the discussion for whether dispensaries should be allowed in the city.

“Do we want to have these types of establishments here in town or could they be located elsewhere outside of our community?” said Council Member Tim McCarthy, the chairman of the zoning and planning committee. “That’s a question that I think all citizens should be able to think about and express an opinion on.”

The council is considering a new ordinance that would change the zoning code to include up to two dispensaries. The businesses would not be permitted within 500 feet of libraries, schools, churches, childcare centers, or public playgrounds, per the Ohio Revised Code.

Some council members said supporting businesses could be good for the tax base.

“I think with what’s going with our schools and what’s been going on in our city, that’s been a conscious conversation about how do we help facilitate economic development. Which kinds do we want?” said Council Member Cory Kuhlman during the council meeting.

Leaders said their minds are not made up yet.

“I’m aware that some have reservations, I’m aware that others may be more disposed to allowing these types of uses, I couldn’t predict, I wouldn’t bet on how this might end up,” Council Member McCarthy told 13 Action News.

Citizens at the meeting did not speak about the proposed zoning changes during public comment. Multiple attendees told 13 Action News they are still forming their opinions. One man said he believes marijuana should be treated the same as alcohol.

The city council will go through two more readings before voting on the code amendment. They encourage citizens to reach out with their thoughts.

The proposed changes are only for dispensaries. Cultivators and processors are still not allowed within city limits.

There will be public comment during the council meetings on March 4 and March 18, when the council will have the second and third readings.

City leaders said citizens are also welcome to reach out on social media and through the city’s website with their thoughts.

City administration said they are working on releasing more detailed information to help citizens understand the proposed changes.
