CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Doctors are warning about the potential “tricks” in candies as families prepare for Halloween night.
Dr. Chris Holstege, Director of UVA’s Blue Ridge Poison Center, says he has seen many kids ingest THC edibles while mistaking them for normal candy.
He says cannabis can severely sedate children and lead to medical conditions so drastic they could need life support.
“If there‘s a package open, discolored, doesn‘t look right…there‘s a number of things that you need to be careful with,” said Dr. Holstege. “If in question, throw it out…I want people to be comfortable, go out and trick or treat, it‘s a fun time of year, had great times with my kids, but it’s also being aware and being smart.”
Dr. Holstege says you should feed your kids before trick-or-treating so they are not tempted to eat any candy before you can check it at home. He also advises against allowing your kids to eat any home-baked goods.
