There are many potential uses for industrial hemp, such as in the creation of building materials.
WAHPETON, N.D. – At the brand-new Väderstad building in Wahpeton, members of all parts of the industrial hemp industry met to discuss its viability as a potential crop for the region.
Harold Stanislawski of the Agricultural Utilization Research Institute says that this year’s Northland Industrial Hemp Summit is all about building relationships.
“We’re willing to cooperate and collaborate with one another – demonstrated here today,” he said.
Amanda Jelinek, one of the event organizers, agrees.
“The feedback I’ve gotten so far is really good. People have asked a lot of questions, and there seems to be a good deal of interest.”
They say industrial hemp – not the stuff with THC – has almost limitless applications, and could bring a significant financial boon to the area if farmers choose to integrate it into their crop rotations.
Organizers say that the spirit of cooperation they’ve seen develop bodes well for the future of the plant in the Red River Valley and beyond.
“We have a processor from Missouri here, for instance, that’s ‘Hey I’m potentially interested in satellite locations for increased processing.’ That’s good for economic developments,” said Stanislawski. “I like to see that.”
In 2023, the value of hemp production in the United States totaled $291 million, up 18% from 2022.
