The Connecticut Legislature officially concluded that its state has the worst per capita cannabis sales record and the most expensive marijuana when compared to three of its New England neighbors. To make matters worse, total Connecticut sales from 2024 were also down significantly overall, to $199.9 million from $274 million in 2023, the state’s first full year of recreational marijuana sales.
That’s according to a report from the Connecticut Office of Legislative Research, which compared the Connecticut marijuana market’s prices and performance to those of Maine, Massachusetts and New Jersey; officials from New York, Rhode Island and Vermont either didn’t have data to share or didn’t respond to Connecticut’s request for information.
In December last year, a gram of legal cannabis cost $10.62 in Connecticut, while a gram cost the least in Massachusetts, at $4.44, the OLR report found. Grams cost $7.09 in Maine and $9.93 in New Jersey.
Per capita sales that same month in Connecticut were just $54.40, compared to per capita sales of $233.16 in Massachusetts, the report found.
Even Rhode Island, which had the lowest overall sales, had a higher per capita rate of $84.59 in legal marijuana sales.
If the four states are compared on total sales figures, however, Connecticut is more middle of the pack in New England, with just under $200 million in legal cannabis sold last year. The lowest state was Rhode Island, which sold just $94 million, while Maine sold $243.9 million, Massachusetts sold $1.6 billion, and New Jersey sold $950.7 million, the OLR report found.
New York dispensaries also sold $856.3 million in 2024, according to that state’s Office of Cannabis Management.
The New England state also had the highest per gram price for cannabis when compared to neighboring states. Read More
