PORTLAND (WGME) – Federal authorities say illegal growing of marijuana is happening all over rural parts of the country, including in Maine.
There were dozens of illegal grow busts in the state in 2024.
According to Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), many of the grow operations are tied to Chinese organized crime.
“It’s a national security threat,” Collins said. “Why are the Chinese doing this? They’re doing it because it’s an easy way for them to launder money.”
Collins calls this a serious problem in the state and says Maine needs more help from the federal government.
She also called the operations a public health hazard, because the houses used for these illegal grow operations are often covered in black mold.
