WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick announced earlier this month that he will back a bill to ban all THC products from being sold in Texas.
In his announcement, Patrick uses words like “unsafe” and “unregulated” to describe THC products being sold.
Patrick is working with Senator Charles Perry from Lubbock to pass Senate Bill Three, which would ban all THC products that he says has been targeting Texas children and exposes them to dangerous THC levels.
Texas House Representative for District 56, Pat Curry, backs up Patrick, saying that they want to close the loopholes that dispensaries use to legally sell different THC, CBD, and hemp products.
“You give them an inch, and they take a mile. You allow them to grow hemp for other purposes and they take the hemp, and they are able to skirt through the laws, and they create drinks and other things that are more potent than marijuana itself is,” Curry said.
In hearing the news of Senate Bill Three, Owner of Willie’s CBD shop in Waco, Ray Ramos, says they are nervous about what will happen if the bill passes.
“THC products are about 85% of our revenue, and that’s what we sell the most of,” Ramos said.
Ramos says that if the state is worried about dangerous products being sold, they should have more regulations for lab testing.
“Why would you axe it before you try to regulate it further? We already do lab tests, make the lab standards higher,” Ramos explained.
Ramos says that this bill will cause pain for legal business owners and customers of all ages if passed.
“A lot of people that come to us for their ailments and for their relief you’d be messing up a lot of them, and you’d be putting a lot of folks like us out of business. Lawmakers claim they are for small business when they are about to shut down thousands.”
Curry says that there are still details of the bill that will be finalized if it moves through the Senate and the House.
“The bill will pass the senate first and the form in which it passes the senate will be brought to the house. Then it has got to go through the house committee, whichever committee it is assigned to, and then ultimately to the house floor. So, the devil is always the details in these bills,” Curry explained.
