The Seward County Attorney’s Office has charged two people who were arrested for allegedly carrying more than 200 pounds of marijuana in the vehicle they were traveling in.

On Dec. 19, at about 6 p.m., a Seward County Sheriff’s deputy stopped a blue Ford F-350 with Minnesota license plates on Interstate 80 near Exit 379 for failing to signal and failing to make a complete stop at a stop sign, according to the probable cause affidavit.

The driver, 81-year-old Dan Beleane, and a passenger, 69-year-old Sheila Beleane, both of Minnesota, were the only occupants of the truck, according to the affidavit.

During the stop, the deputy had a brief conversation with Dan Beleane and became suspicious that he might be involved in criminal activity, the affidavit said. The deputy issued a warning for the traffic violations and then asked for consent to search the truck but was denied.

The deputy then called for a K9 unit, and a dog alerted deputies to possible narcotics in the vehicle, leading to a probable cause search of the truck.

According to the affidavit, a deputy located six large duffel bags and two white coolers in the bed of the Ford containing 246 shrink-wrapped packages of marijuana.

The Sheriff’s Office believes the combined weight of the marijuana is more than 200 pounds.

Both Dan and Sheila Beleane, whose relationship was not stated in the affidavit, were arrested and taken to the Seward County jail.

They were charged with delivery or distribution of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance without paying the drug tax stamp.

They each paid $25,000 of their $250,000 percentage bonds and were released.
