SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. – This week, Siskiyou County Sheriff Jeremiah LaRue traveled to Washington, D.C., to speak out about the growing dangers associated with the illegal marijuana industry.

During his visit to Capitol Hill, Sheriff LaRue addressed key issues related to illegal marijuana operations that are not only affecting California but also spreading across the United States.

Key Issues Highlighted by Sheriff LaRue

Sheriff LaRue stressed that the illegal marijuana industry has become a public health threat, with dangerous consequences for both people and the environment. He explained that illegal marijuana cultivation often involves the use of foreign-labeled pesticides, which pose a significant health risk. Additionally, he pointed out the environmental damage caused by illegal growing operations, including destruction of natural habitats and water diversion. The Sheriff also highlighted concerns about animal abuse and human rights violations within the industry.

“The problem has not just been isolated to California. It’s gone beyond across the United States, and it’s affecting everyone,” Sheriff LaRue said. “It’s a public health issue due to these illegal foreign-labeled pesticides that are on the product as well as environmental damage, animal abuse and human rights issues.”

Raising Awareness for Siskiyou County and Beyond

As the new Congress and administration begin setting their priorities for 2025, Sheriff LaRue sees this as an important opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges posed by illegal marijuana cultivation.
