HELENA, Mont. — A state senator is wanting to shift marijuana tax revenue towards treatment, prevention and law enforcement with a proposed bill.

“The choice between revenue from the marijuana tax be appropriated for habitat, for wildlife, or park, trails or non-game habitat. Should that revenue go there, or should it go to the harms that we’re seeing develop from the marijuana industry,” said State Sen. Tom McGillvray, R-Billings.

Senate Bill 307 went before the Senate Business, Labor and Economic Affairs committee Thursday.

Proponents shared concerns about the black market impacting children across the state and the rise of youth marijuana usage from 2020 to 2022.

They add having funds go towards prevention and hiring task force marijuana investigators will keep Montanans safe.

Opponents shared the Department of Public Health and Human Services have funds through the Heart Act to help with prevention and treatment.

Others are worried about stripping funds from conservation efforts, impact on quality outdoor opportunities, and public access.

Another public hearing will be held on a future date.
