A report from a Massaponax High School student that a vehicle was improperly parked without a permit in the school parking lot near the football stadium led to felony weapons charges for another student at the Spotsylvania County school.
School administrators and the school resource officer investigated the vehicle and became suspicious of an odor. It was determined that the vehicle belonged to a student, who was removed from class and escorted to the vehicle.
During the investigation, the student informed administrators and the resource officer that there were drugs and firearms in the vehicle. A subsequent search discovered two firearms and marijuana, which was turned into the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.
Principal William Lancaster III said in a statement to parents that no other students were in danger.
“The incident was contained to the school parking lot and did not impact the learning environment,” Lancaster said. “All students and staff were safe while the incident was investigated.”
Lancaster said safety is a priority and the incident was taken seriously. He expressed appreciation for the student who reported the concern and reminded others to report similar incidents.
Darius Anderson, 18, of Spotsylvania, is facing two felony counts of possession of a firearm on school property, possession of a concealed weapon and possession of marijuana on school property. He was transported to the Rappahannock Regional Jail on a secured bond. The investigation is ongoing.
