SAN FRANCISCO – A suspect is dead following an exchange of gunfire with San Francisco police who were investigating the shooting of the owner of the Vapor Room Weed Dispensary, who was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

What we know:

San Francisco police said that the violent scene unfolded on Monday just before 5 p.m. near Mission and 9th streets, where a man had been shot.

Business people and others in the neighborhood identified the victim as Martin Olive, owner of the Vapor room at 79 9th Street.

Longtime cannabis advocate David Goldman saidOlive was one of the first dispensary owners in San Francisco.

As he was being taken to the hospital, police said that a suspect was possibly in a nearby building.

Police said in a statement that they surrounded the building to try to arrest the suspect. They also brought in the special hostage negotiations team, police said.

But the suspect “failed to comply and refused to exit the building,” police said. “During this contact, an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

Officers ended up going into the building and found that the suspect had been injured.

Officers and paramedics tried to help, but the suspect died.

It’s unclear who fired their weapons first.

Police said they found a gun at the scene.

What they’re saying:

A man named Ray who lives in the apartment building said he heard a shootout between the suspect and police.

“Someone I know who lives on the same floor, he was telling us that they were firing gunfire back and forth,” he said.

What we don’t know:

Police did not give any more information, including the gender or name of the suspect.

As of early Tuesday morning, there was still a police presence in the area. Crime scene tape and patrol cars were stationed on the street outside Go Go Market and Deli.

Big picture view:

San Francisco police have shot two other suspects in the last four months.

In November 2024, police shot and injured Justin Matthew Alderman, 30, who was armed when he ran into the Powell Street BART station.

In December, San Francisco police shot and killed Peter Hodge, an armed security guard near Union Square, who drove onto a sidewalk near Kearny and Post streets, striking three people.
