WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Senate Bill 3 has been scheduled for a vote on March 3. The bill pertains to the regulation of consumable hemp products and the hemp-derived cannabinoids contained in those products.
As it stands now, because of a loophole in a 2019 Agriculture bill, anyone 21 and older can walk into a shop and buy a product that looks, smells, tastes and effects the body just like marijuana.
The sale of hemp-based THC products has quickly grown into a multi-billion-dollar industry while marijuana is still quite illegal.
Shops selling hemp products that contain THC have sprung up all over the state.
While the landscape has changed in the past few years, the future of marijuana and hemp products now lies in the hands of Texas Lawmakers.
Lt. Governor Dan Patrick said that closing this loophole and shutting down these businesses is a legislative priority.
