OKLAHOMA CITY (KSWO) – The Texoma High-Intensity Drug Trafficking area released a scathing report on Marijuana in Oklahoma last week.
The group made up of law enforcement organizations across Oklahoma and Texas says that the report is the first of its kind.
In 2018, medical marijuana was legalized in Oklahoma.
Last week’s eighty-three-page report provides a comprehensive analysis of Marijuana use and its impacts around the state.
For example, the report claims that the four-year average adult past-month marijuana use increased one hundred and sixty-two percent compared to the four-year average before legalization.
During the announcement, Oklahoma Senator James Lankford did not try to hide his opposition to medical marijuana. Arguing that officials at the State and National level need to do more to protect Oklahomans
“We have hard decisions to be able to make on what we’re going to do, to be able to protect our kids in the days ahead, because, with the calls to poison control, with the trips to the hospital that are happening for the youngest of the young, and again, we’ve seen a giant growth in children showing up two years old and younger,” Lankford said. “This also comes out in the report that are ending up with marijuana poisoning.”
In the state capitol, southwest Oklahoma representative Trey Caldwell says the legislature recognized this issue three years ago and took action.
“This is something that we’ve been very talkative about,” Caldwell said. “It’s been up in these hallways going on now three years. We’ve seen what happens when you have medical marijuana that’s written in such a way that’s not really medical. It’s almost recreational.”
