As the world evolves and changes, so does the way people ingest marijuana. People sat around a smoke-filled fireplace 2500 years ago for its benefits, but today, weed has become far easier to access, especially as now carrying a vape pen is an option.

“Carts are just way more convenient. You could have it wherever and it doesn’t smell as much and then it’s just easier to bring around [and] carry with you on the go,” said Ally Kowalski, a third-year business major at Cal State Fullerton.

Though vapes have increased in popularity, many people do not know what is exactly inside them.  In June 2024, the Los Angeles Times published an article about the recalling of marijuana vapes. The article provided a chart with over 26 pages containing 155 vape pens and the ingredients listed. One of the chemicals included was Chlorfenapyr.

Chlorfenapyr in THC (the chemical that gets you high) can disrupt ATP production, a substance providing energy for metabolic processes in the body. Another popular pesticide that brands love to use is Trifloxystrobin, a pesticide that causes dermatitis. The list goes on and on.

The extensive list of brands that contain pesticides and unsafe chemicals includes companies such as Stiiizy, West Coast Cure, Backpack Boyz and more. These brands are top distributors of marijuana vapes, making them cheap and accessible to college students.

CEO and founder of Cannabiotix, Neema Samari, explained how many companies use outside sourcing for their products. This takes control away from the companies’ manufacturing processes.

“You have to do a lot of research on whoever you’re getting stuff from and then see a pattern from there that would make you feel comfortable that they’re never gonna cheat to make one dollar and sell you something that’s not clean,” Samari said.

As the stereotype goes, college kids are broke, making cheap vape pens their ideal way of ingesting marijuana. However, not all brands of marijuana vape pens carry pesticides and unsafe chemicals.

“We have to be very on top of quality control and always ensuring that what we put forward is something that we would smoke ourselves, eat ourselves as an edible on a daily basis and feel very good about,” Samari said.

Some other prominent brands that passed the LA Times’ found to not have pesticides are Raw Garden and Wyld.

As health and ingredient clarity are becoming a point of emphasis for consumers, many are making the switch to clean carts for their long-term health.

“As a healthier person, I wouldn’t want to have parasites in me or any chemicals,” Kowalski said. “I think long term, there could be a lot of medical challenges I could face, which sucks to deal with something long term that you did in your past”

As something that has become a pastime to many students, knowing the ingredients that are in marijuana vape pens is important for one’s overall health. Some resources to refer to include the Confident Cannabis and Leafly to verify the quality of the cartridges.
