CHEROKEE, N.C. (WLOS) — More than 4,000 people showed up for the first day of legal marijuana sales for anyone 21 or older in Cherokee, according toQualla Enterprises’ general manager.

People lined up for hours to enter the Great Smoky Cannabis Company Dispensary on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024.

Forrest Parker, the general manager for Qualla Enterprises, thanked everyone’s patience for being part of history. He said there is a lot of infrastructure and logistical growth to be done, and adjustments to be made.

“You’re going to see us in the next weeks and months be working on a lot of things that are visible and a lot of things that hopefully are very positively felt,” Parker said on Monday.

The dispensary first opened on April 20 but was limited to medical marijuana sales. That was followed by recreational sales earlier this summer to adult tribal members.

Now, everyone 21 and over can purchase marijuana for recreational use while on the reservation.

Marijuana remains illegal in the rest of North Carolina.
