SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Two people have been charged after a robbery in Springfield on New Year’s Day over a $20 marijuana debt.

According to court documents, 24-year-old Vernell Hale is charged with first-degree burglary, unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of armed criminal action, first-degree robbery, and unlawful discharge of a firearm. And 26-year-old Sydney Miller is charged with first-degree robbery and armed criminal action.

Greene County investigators say around 8 p.m., Springfield Police officers responded to a house on E. Nora Street. When officers got there, they found the victim.

The victim told police someone was knocking on their door. Due to the time of night, the owner grabbed a shotgun and went to see who was at the door. Two people, Hale and Miller, then stepped into the house. Authorities say the victim knew the two.

Hale confronted the victim, stating they owed Hale $20.00. The victim noticed Hale had a handgun and was demanding the victim pay him the $20.00.

According to court documents, the victim went to return the shotgun to the bedroom, but before they could, Hale grabbed the gun and held onto it until the debt was paid. Hale then left the house.

Investigators say, while outside the house, Hale fired a single shot from his handgun while standing in the victim’s yard. Hale and Miller then left. That’s when the victim called police.

According to investigators, Hale lived a few houses away from the victim. Officers went to the house and talked with Hale. Hale and Miller were then arrested.

According to court documents, Hale and Miller spoke to investigators about the incident. Miller told police the victim owed her $20.00 from a marijuana transaction. Both Hale and Miller say the victim gave Hale the shotgun to hold until the victim was able to get the $20.00.

Hale and Miller are being held in the Greene County Jail without bond.
