Suspects used the common tactic of using a vehicle to crash into the pot shop’s front door in an effort to gain entry.

SEATTLE — At least two pot shops were targeted in crash-and-grab burglary attempts early Friday morning in Seattle.

Both The Reef Cannabis in Capitol Hill and Cannazone in SoDo were driven into by cars, a common tactic suspects use to try and gain entry to pot shops when they are closed.

The owner of Cannazone said at least two cars were involved in the attempted break-in at the store. Cannazone had a security door installed that the owner credited with helping keep the suspects from being able to get inside Friday morning. The owner said the door cost roughly $6,000. The burglary attempt happened around 4 a.m., and while suspects did not gain entry or steal anything, they did hit the gas meter outside the business.

KING 5 arrived to the scene just as the vehicle used to try and break into The Reef Cannabis was being towed away. KING 5 is working to confirm whether suspects gained entry in that attempt and whether any items were stolen from inside.

Both of these pot shop locations have been targeted before in similar burglary attempts that KING 5 has covered. In August 2024, over half a dozen suspects used a vehicle to smash into The Reef Cannabis and steal an estimated $20,000 worth of merchandise. The owner also told police there was roughly $20,000 of damage done to the store in the burglary.

In March 2024, Cannazone was one of three marijuana businesses to be hit by a crash-and-grab burglary in a 3-day span. At the time, the owner told KING 5 an estimated $15,000 of merchandise was stolen by the group of suspects.

State lawmakers dedicated discussion to laws that would strengthen penalties for pot shop break-ins during the 2024 legislative session, but nothing ultimately was passed.
