COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Over the weekend, as more votes are being counted by the El Paso County clerk and recorder’s office, the dueling ballot questions about marijuana in Colorado Springs saw a shift, with more votes against prohibiting retail marijuana.
Earlier this week, both opposing measures looked like they would pass. At the time, 53% of voters were saying yes on ballot question 2D. That one would amend the charter of Colorado Springs to ban the sale of retail marijuana in the city. Ballot issue 300 would allow existing medical marijuana licensees to apply to see retail or recreational marijuana.
As of 6 p.m. on Saturday, new results from the clerk and recorder showed a shift, with more people voting to legalize recreational marijuana.
So far, about 50.5% of voters now stand against 2D and 49.5% in favor. Meanwhile, 54% of voters have cast their ballot in favor of 300.
If this trend continues, 2D would fail and 300 would pass, thereby allowing medical marijuana licensees to apply for those retail or recreational licenses with certain restrictions in place. It would also mean a ban on retail marijuana would be struck down.
This was put forward by City Council President Pro Tem Lynette Crow-Iverson, who said the ballot initiative would give a final answer to whether or not there will be recreational marijuana in the Springs.
More than 70% of votes have been counted so far, but the results are still subject to change, as seen by the sudden shift, so it could still be a little bit before the official results are called and the city gets an answer as to whether voters want recreational marijuana in Colorado Springs.
