You’ve probably seen CBD products being touted in various places.
From online stores to gas stations, it can be found almost everywhere.
According to a study from the Harvard Medical School CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana. It is derived directly from the hemp plant, a cousin of marijuana, or manufactured in a lab. Although it comes from the hemp plant, it does not have the same effect as marijuana.
“It is one of hundreds of components in marijuana,” the study states. “CBD does not cause a high by itself.
But CBD products are not yet regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Phillip Heady has been carrying CBD products in his Wetumpka vape shop for about five years.
“We are not allowed to talk about its medicinal properties,” Heady said. “We can relate others’ experiences with it.”
Harvard said in its study CBD might be a possible treatment for some anxiety disorders.
“In a chronic study, systemic CBD prevented increased anxiety produced by chronic unpredictable stress,” the study said. “Existing preclinical evidence strongly supports the potential of CBD as a treatment for anxiety disorders.”
Harvard said those with insomnia may benefit from CBD. It may help someone fall asleep and stay asleep. It may help with chronic pain especially due to inflammation due to arthritis.
Heady said he has customers who purchase CBD products that fall under this category.
“Our customers say they see pain relief, especially inflammatory pain,” Heady said. “They are mainly using cannabis oil products or lotions and balms. We once had a massage therapist who used CBD oil whose clients reported less main in the days after the oil was used.”
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) said in a report systemically administered CBD can reduce acute increases in heart rate and blood pressure induced by restraint stress.
According to the FDA website, there is increasing interest in the potential utility of cannabis for a variety of medical conditions, as well as research on the potential adverse health effects from use of cannabis. However, the FDA has not approved a marketing application for cannabis to treat diagnosed diseases or conditions.
Heady said the store has worked hard to ensure the product they carry is what it says it is following all of the state and federal regulations on it.
“We are concerned about how available it is,” Heady said. “It seems every little shop on the corner seems to have it now.”
Heady’s shop offers gummies, chocolates, disposals and more with CBD.
“Five years ago it was almost taboo,” Heady said. “Now it has become more mainstream. More and more are comfortable talking about it and trying it.”
