CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The owner of an Iowa hemp company is seeing some national recognition for the products he makes and sells despite new laws that made him reformulate his recipe.

Corey Coleman, the owner of Sky High has spent the last four years creating hemp-infused products.

“It’s lots and lots of work, lots of testing, going back and tweaking this, tweaking that,” said Coleman.

That hard work recently paid off. Several of his drinks were named not only best in the Midwest, but best I the nation as part of the “2024 America’s Best Beverage Awards”. His Apple Fiji Pear cooler received a gold medal for best Hemp THC Drink.

“It’s a validation of hard work, focus, and time well spent,” said Coleman.

Coleman said getting to this point hasn’t been easy. He started creating his THC-infused cooler drinks in September of 2023. Last year, Iowa’s governor signed into law new regulations restricting how much THC a product can contain. THC drinks are limited to 4 milligrams a serving.

“We thought we were going to make a ten-milligram beverage and with the new regulations, we had to re-adjust and reformulate and bring everything down to 4 milligrams,” he said.

Coleman says perfecting the science to achieve the taste they wanted took nearly two years, but getting this recognition as a small business owner gives him the validation they wanted.

“Part of being an entrepreneur, you have to be ready and willing to adapt and if you’re not, then being an entrepreneur is not the game for you,” said Coleman.
