GADSDEN, Ala. (WBRC) – City leaders in Gadsden are discussing how they plan to enforce new laws regarding the sale of hemp and THC products in Alabama.
The Alabama Attorney General’s Office has clarified that it will be illegal to sell or possess smokable hemp products as of July 1, 2025.
The attorney general’s office said someone could be prosecuted for having or selling those products on or after July 1, as well.
The law defines a consumable hemp product as: “A finished product that is intended for human or animal consumption, and that contains any part of the hemp plant or any compound, concentrate, extract, isolate, or resin derived from hemp.”
Products like gummies or drinks fall under this definition.
Gadsden Street Crimes and Narcotics Detective Simeon Smith talked about some of the issues with these products and the attraction that peek the interest of kids.
“The attraction to these is they’re making it like a candy. They’re flavoring it whether it be bubble gum, whether it be apple. Growing up you seeing these and you take them. Well, after a little while you just kind of, you build up a habit or an addiction to it and you’ve got to go about it trying to get it at any means and that’s where it becomes dangerous,” said Smith.
The bill’s sponsor says this law does not affect or involve medical cannabis.
