A man was arrested on DUI and weapon charges on Thursday after police allegedly found him smoking marijuana behind the wheel with a gun in the car during a traffic stop.

The traffic stop was made on East Avenue just after 7:30 a.m. when an officer reportedly saw the driver of a black Tesla blow through a red light at the Hendricks Avenue intersection, according to Lt. Tomasz Podgorski of the Norwalk Police Department.

Podgorski said the officer was monitoring the morning rush hour as part of the department’s Summer Slowdown Days Initiative aimed at making the roads safer. The officer conducted a traffic stop after the Tesla driver continued onto the I-95 South on-ramp without stopping.

The driver was identified as 29-year-old Kirk Thomas of Bridgeport, according to Podgorski. Thomas was allegedly found to be under the influence and was smoking marijuana while he was driving, Podgorski said. He also had a Glock pistol, according to Podgorski.

Thomas was taken into custody, and his vehicle was towed. He was charged with carrying a firearm under the influence of alcohol or drugs, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to obey traffic control signals, operating a vehicle with illegally tinted windows and smoking, inhaling or ingesting cannabis while operating a motor vehicle.

His bond was set at $5,000. He is scheduled to appear before a judge on June 26.
